EXPERIENCE IN THE POULTRY INDUSTRY

John W. Tyson was a pioneer when, in the beginning of the 30’s, he decided to haul chickens from Springdale, Arkansas to markets in Kansas City e St. Louis. In 1936, John was the first to take the long trip from Arkansas to the more lucrative Chicago poultry markets. Within a year, his customer network had extended to cities like Cincinnati, Detroit, Cleveland, Memphis, and Houston. That marked the beginning of the history of a company that would revolutionize the poultry industry.

In FY 2008, chicken sales represented 33% of Tyson’s total business – preceded by beef (44% of total) and followed by pork (13%) and prepared foods (10%). Although it is in the second position in the company sales, Tyson’s chicken segment requires a large industrial operation and extremely complex logistics to slaughter and process 40 million chickens weekly.

PORK AND BEEF

Tyson Foods is also the largest supplier of pork and beef in the world. Tyson Fresh Meats, the unit responsible for this segment, has over 60 production facilities in the US and a joint venture in Argentina.

Differently from its chicken business, the pork and beef operations rely on a network of independent suppliers. The fresh meat processing plants (12 for beef and 9 for pork) are strategically located near the largest and most qualified pork and beef suppliers.

PREPARED FOODS

This division of Tyson Foods markets prepared meals, pizza crusts and toppings, pepperoni, tortillas, ethnic foods, appetizers, soups, sauces, and many other products. To give an idea of what this business represents to the company.
